Ace the Interview: How to Prepare Like a Pro 🕵️‍♂️

Getting that interview is just the first step—preparing for it is where you truly shine! Here’s everything you need to know to impress the recruiters and get that offer letter in your inbox
Table of Contents
Company Research
Understand the Mission: Visit the company’s website and "About Us" section to learn their values, goals, and mission. Try to connect these to your personal goals or values. For example, if they prioritize sustainability and you’re passionate about eco-friendly practices, bring this up in your interview.
Study Recent Campaigns: Review their latest marketing initiatives across social media, advertisements, and press releases. Be ready to discuss specific campaigns you admire, why they stood out, and how you could contribute to similar projects.
Explore Industry Trends: Dive into the broader industry landscape. Understanding how the company compares to competitors or how they’re positioned in the market shows you’re proactive and knowledgeable.
Prepare for Interview Questions
Common Questions: Start with foundational questions like:
“Why do you want to work here?”
“What’s a recent trend in marketing you find exciting?”
Behavioural Questions: Expect situational questions such as, “Tell me about a time you managed multiple deadlines.” Use the STAR Method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to organize your answers effectively and focus on results.
Technical Skills: Review the tools or platforms listed in the job description. Prepare examples of when you’ve used tools like PowerPoint, Excel, or Canva. If you lack experience with any tool, acknowledge it and express enthusiasm to learn.
Mock Interviews: Practice out loud, preferably with a friend or mentor, to fine-tune your delivery and identify areas to improve.
Questions for the Recruiter
Prepare insightful questions to ask during the interview. For example:
“How does this role contribute to the company’s overall goals?”
“What does success look like in the first three months?”
“Are there any recent challenges the team is facing that I could help address?”
These questions not only show your interest but also provide valuable insights into the role and the company.
Avoid generic questions (e.g., “What’s the company culture?”) unless you’re diving deeper into specifics about the culture.
The Interview
Arrive Early: Virtual or in-person, being early shows you’re punctual and gives you time to settle. Test your tech setup beforehand for virtual interviews.
Dress Professionally: Even for remote interviews, dressing formally boosts your confidence and conveys professionalism. If in doubt, opt for business casual or formal wear.
Communicate Confidently: Answer questions concisely and emphasize results from your past experiences. Highlight the skills or projects that align most closely with the job description.
Engage with the Interviewer: Listen actively, nod when appropriate, and ask follow-up questions based on their remarks. Building rapport can set you apart.
Close with Enthusiasm: End the interview by thanking them and expressing your excitement about the opportunity. For example, “This conversation has made me even more eager to contribute to [Company Name].”

Hi (recruiter name),
Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to interview me for the Marketing Intern position at Unilever!
I had such a fantastic experience speaking with you and (name of the other interviewer), especially learning about the reason you chose Unilever, but more importantly why you chose to stay for as long as you have. I genuinely appreciate your transparency when speaking on how Unilever has changed throughout the years and what it has become today.
As I mentioned during our interview, I believe that my practical experience in marketing and passion for creativity, storytelling, and sustainability would prove to be an asset to the team as a Marketing Intern, especially at a diverse and purpose-led company like Unilever.
Thank you again for the opportunity!

I found the interview to be super insightful and learned tons about what types of problems may arise in the workplace and how to go about them.
